You may have heard of the Dearborn Animal Shelter in the news recently.  They were the people who took in over 40 dogs found in a single home in Detroit.  This piece was commissioned by Cheryl Good of Ann Arbor for a window in the shelter.

Everyone is familiar with the Pink Ribbon, but this is an Orange Ribbon – the ribbon for Leukemia.  What follows is an unabashed political statement.

An acquaintance of my mother-in-law lost his job and along with it, his family’s health insurance.  Subsequently his wife was diagnosed with Leukemia.  The family now faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.  There is a fundraising auction this weekend with dozens of donated services and goods.  This is my small contribution to the effort.   What industrialized country would allow this family to enter bankruptcy in order to cover medical expenses?   Shame on Us!

These two pieces are displayed on my piano.  The green pieces features 3 iridescent stones and a polished copper star as ornaments.  The piece on the right is reminiscent of Jerusalem stone the city’s many arches.  It includes a Hamsa and a pendant representing all mankind.

Sometimes I talk to the glass – and sometimes the glass talks to me. This glass suggested “A Primordial Soup”, a theory which suggests that Life began in a warm ocean from a combination of chemicals. But I saw something preceding even the beginning of Life.

From Genesis Chapter One: “When God began to create Heaven and Earth the earth was unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep… Then God said: Y’HI OHR — “LET THERE BE LIGHT” and there was Light.

Light symbolizes human-kind’s commitment to clarity, rather than mystery — to openness over secrecy — to study rather than blind faith.

I want to thank Brenda Supuwood, one of my mentor’s, at Universal Stained Glass for the glass that inspired this piece of art.

Y’hi Ohr measures 16″ X 16″.

I still enjoy exploring the possibilities of the image of the Hamsa. In this piece the figure of the doves is emphasized by the simple elegance of the transparent glasses.

Lady Justice depicts justice as a goddess equipped with three symbols: a sword symbolizing the court’s coercive power; a human scale weighing competing claims in each hand; and a blindfold indicating impartiality.

My depiction of the Scales of justice is a bit more cubist. Please feel free to comment. I’d love to hear your reaction.

Facebook is an amazing tool. Friends and students I knew from decades ago have searched, found me, and are surprised to see what I am doing these days. One of my student’s mothers is a cancer survivor. The student commissioned me to create a piece to commemorate the anniversary of her being cancer free. After several emails back and forth we came up with the simple design above.

Post script: After seeing the first Pink Ribbon, and ‘friend of old’ (rather than an ‘Old Friend’ asked me to commission the same design. The result is the photo of the second Pink Ribbon.

Post-post script:   I am now working on my 4th Pink Ribbon with an order for a 5th!

This piece drew the most interest at the Celebrate Israel event this weekend. Many people commented they could visualize this glass hanging in their dining room as the Shabbat candles were lit. This piece was commissioned for a tribute dinner for Ameinu – the Labor Zionist Alliance. The Hebrew word at the top is Tzedek which translates roughly as Justice, in particular Social Justice, a basic pillar of Ameinu. This piece of art is being proudly displayed in the Dean’s Office in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. I was commissioned to create a stained glass which drew on traditional sources of knowledge: Text and the Natural World. I see the fruits of the future firmly rooted in the text of our past. A “friend of old” saw the Blue Hamsa on my blog (see below) and asked if I could make one in red for him – and here it is! Wondering how that works? I sent him pictures of the glass and the agate I would be working with and on his approval I created this piece. It’s That Simple.

Mira – My Eshet Chayil

There are posts in this blog (below) honoring for my boys. It would only be fitting here to mention my daughter, Mira.

Without embarrassing her with too much praise on this blog – I wanted to create a piece of art for her office. Mira works for the Jewish Family Service of Ann Arbor. She spends her entire day performing works of Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World. In her honor I created a piece that combines 3 elements: Judaism and Peace along with the word Tzedek.

Tzedek has several translations: righteousness, justice, and tzedek is the root of the Hebrew word for charity. In this work I have intertwined the word tzedek with the image of a white dove whose shaped is outlined by a blue six-pointed star.

This piece of leaded glass expresses my feelings for my Eshet Chayil - my woman of valor.

This was one of the first sketches I made when I first began working in glass, but I put it away until this week. This piece features the two tablets of the Law handed down on Mt. Sinai hovering above twin images of a Magain David, the Star of David. The Tablets of the Law would look beautiful displayed on your mantel or hanging from your window. Having just completed the fall Jewish holidays, I was inspired to create a piece symbolic of the season. A Shofar (*) is the Ram’s Horn which is blown several times during the Rosh Hashana service and at the culmination of the Yom Kippur service. At Beth Israel Congregation in Ann Arbor we have a tradition for everyone with a Shofar to gather on the Bimah and signal the end of the Day of Atonement in unison with a long, loud blast. The deep sound of the long Shofarot lays the base for the short soprano Shofarot. The various sounds suggested the various colors of my Shofarot.

Every time my grandson Matan walked by while I was working on this piece he whispered its name: “…time out…”. He then shot me a glance as if hoping this was not another piece created in his honor. Matan: You’re a Mitzva Super-Hero in my mind.

For the first time I have ventured into a medium other than glass. This piece has 5 polished agates scattered on the surface. Agates vary in their crystalline structure adding interest to this piece. The distinctly different clear glass I chose for this piece scatters the existing light in fascinating, continually changing patterns. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it.

This piece is the third (and possibly the last) work from the same pattern. I love experimenting with different colors and textures using the same pattern, but now it’s time for me to focus on the 2 large commissioned works I have. It seems I’m back in my Hamsa phase.  Having acquired a number of beautiful agate pieces, I am in the process of incorporating these gems into my art. The agate in this piece dramatically sets off the blue of the Hamsa.

Nobel’s partner asked me to design and create several original pieces, all with a nautical theme, specifically for his lakefront store. This is the second commissioned piece I have created for this venue.
